> Gotten into the dungeon, can't help the creature with the identity crisis, can't get back to the dungeon now, suspect the "flash of white" in the ashes is a red herring, and I'm pretty sure I have tried every option available to me. Of course I haven't, but I can't seem to figure out where I need to focus my attention. Here's my inventory:

Why can't you get back to the dungeon? There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to. I mean, if you've met The Creature, you've obviously made it OUT of the dungeon- and there's no way to get yourself locked in the castle.

Regarding the creature-
You need an item that you don't have. It's located real close to The Creature, but there's something you need to do with it before you can use it to help The Creature.

Regarding the "Flash of white"-
A red herring? Maybe. Maybe you need it to get the best ending of the game... maybe not. I forget.
