Gotten into the dungeon, can't help the creature with the identity crisis, can't get back to the dungeon now, suspect the "flash of white" in the ashes is a red herring, and I'm pretty sure I have tried every option available to me. Of course I haven't, but I can't seem to figure out where I need to focus my attention. Here's my inventory:

Bottle of Acid
Crowbar
Rose
Sword
Box of Matches
Digital Watch
Small Metal Key
Threatening Note
Bucket Filled With Water
Rope
Small Silver Cross
Werewolf's Fang
