More Early Years-- King Soloman's Mines

Okay, I've gotten through a nice-sized chunk of KSM with few problems, but now, I'm stuck. I'm in the room with the fog, where you have to find your way out (where the options are "north," "south," "east" and "west"). Even knowing the hint that was given, I'm having trouble finding my way out. Can someone please give me a hint or two?
