Basically, the Prisoner was a show about a spy of some sort who was thrown into the Scariest Village in the World, which was meant to break peoples' brains so they would talk about whatever it was they were spying for (the details were kept deliberately vague). Everyone was given a number (The protagonist was 'Number Six') and had to refer to other citizens by this instead of their name. Rover was this balloon-looking white ball thing, that also resembled the interior of a lava lamp. When someone tried to escape, it was one of the methods used to track them down (it would absorb the person, a process which appeared intensely painful, and then spit them out back at the main HQ).

The Prisoner has one of the most famous sets of opening dialogue in the world:

"Who are you?"
"The new Number Two."
"Who is Number One?"
"You are Number Six."
"I am not a number! I am a free man!"
"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"
