That's a pretty important dialect marker in North America. I'm on the "they're pronounced the same" side, and when I'm trying to fake an accent where "cot" and "caught" are pronounced differently I have trouble figuring out where the "AW" goes and where it just gets a regular "ah" (since out here we just have "ah" everywhere).
