Scenario #1 is closest to the truth. It's random who the computer players attack, but it's the same for everybody whether they all attack a different character, or two of the computer opponents gang up on a single character. In the case of the latter, the same two computer opponents will be the ones ganging up, but the character they gang up on is random -- that is, if it's character #1 for you, it might be character #2 for somebody else.
