Reviews and Comments

In spite of the fact that this action flick stars the bane of good acting, Keanu Reeves, Speed ain't half bad. Its moderately original premise has a bus with a bomb on it that will explode if the bus drops below 50 miles per hour at any time. In endeavoring to keep that speed up, every conceivable obstacle is encountered, including the infamous unfinished bridge which involves a jump so poorly filmed, it looks like the stunt coordinator made use of an anti-gravity device. Regardless, the cat and mouse games Reeves plays with badguy Dennis Hopper are fun to watch, and Sandra Bullock launched her career as the passenger forced by circumstance to take control of the wheel. It's a rip-roaring ride, fun enough to excuse many of the frequent implausibilities, but when it's all over, you'll wonder what the heck you just saw. It's 115 minutes of supreme entertainment, and not one minute more. See it letterboxed if you're going to see it at all -- the pan-n-scan version is claustrophobic.
