Again, Paul Verhoeven gets close to creating an imaginative film that realizes a unique vision and flubs it by substituting excessive violence for ideas. It's not that I inherently object to extreme violence, but I object to it when it is unearned and even more so when it comes in the place of a payoff for ideas and themes that are set up to have one. Why go to the trouble of setting up an interesting futuristic society and a plot that begs for exploration about the dehumanization inherent in the advance of technology if you're just going to use it as a setting for a blood fest?
