Reviews and Comments

Going My Way is a little bit of everything, beautifully blended into a satisfying whole. It's a character drama, about a new priest (Bing Crosby) sent by the bishop to replace an older one (Barry Fitzgerald) and their conflict of ideas and perspectives. With its witty lines, it's a comedy, and with Bing's pleasant crooning, it's a musical. The result is the kind of socially significant feel-good film that attracted the attention of the Academy, which awarded it the Best Picture Oscar for 1944. Double Indemnity would have been a better choice, but it's hard to argue with Going My Way's considerable charms.
