I believe the war was started so that we could fight terrorists/Al-Queda in another country. Give them a new target so that they would be less likely to attack us at home. We take Saddam out of power, the country collapses and all of the terrorists swarm in and start having a party. We're killing a ton more of them than we would have been able to if we had tried to search for them in all of the hostile countries in the region. Instead we just took over Iraq and let them all come to us. Not only do you get to kill more of them, but even better, now it's just Iraqis who die in the terrorist attacks, not Americans. And since one Iraqi is equal to about .04 Americans, it just makes good business sense.

It's called the "flypaper theory", and it was one of the official justifications for the war. I'm surprised you haven't heard moe about it.
