If you haven't found it already, you should look for another area in the mines which is past the second barrier and where the pillar and stalagmites are located. There's one place where you can (and must) jump from the mine cart to stay alive. Note that when you do that the game is still keeping track of the mine cart moving through the low tunnel nearby. If you hurry you can still catch it elsewhere.
