1) You need something sharper to crack it open, but the sharpening tools are in the present.
2) If you're stuck, though, you should be able to take back something you find on the basketball court. Cleaning it is a bit destructive, though, so you'll have to do some adjusting of your own.
3) I thought it was weird that I could actually make it down to the clinic and that bench on the side of the New Building. So weird, in fact, that the bench had to be hiding something useful...
