Saving our money?

I think the police have figured out a way to save the tax payers some money. I noticed that our county patrol has some new police cars with the blue lights behind the windshield and inside the rear window. This eliminates the "light bar" on top. They will certainly notice improved fuel mileage with the new cars.

I have often wondered why they had not realized how expensive it was to drive cars with their aerodynamics all messed up. At freeway speeds, those things could be costing two or three miles per gallon, and when you figure how much driving those officers do, and the cost of gas, it really adds up.

Back in the day of 50 cents-a-gallon gas, I had a large station wagon with a luggage rack on top. It got about 12 miles per gallon. That's with the rack empty. But I drove it to Kentucky and back with an ice chest up there and it got 9 miles per gallon. I never underrate aerodynamic drag after that experience.

I'm glad that whoever controls the budget has eliminated those gas-wasting light bars. I'll bet the officers doing the driving will notice a big difference in wind noise, fuel consumption, and speed.

Maybe the tax payers will see some benefit too.
