I *think* I start with my little finger and move towards the index. I didn't remember off hand how I did it, so I had to try it out and see. If I did it normally, I moved too fast to conciously keep track of the fingers, so I had to slow down to see what finger hits the table first. As you say above, the fact that I was consciously inspecting it may have affected the results.
