Rental property can be anything from a dream to a nightmare. My wife's mother, who will be 90 next month, has been renting an apartment over her garage for about ten years now. It had to be remodeled about five years ago and she has had to call a plumber a couple of times, but it has not been a lot of trouble. She has had good renters, mostly young people, and has become friends with all of them.

The rent is a major part of her income. It's also nice to have somebody living in the back yard, since she lives alone.
