Small means small, red means red, cable means cable (and there are only TWO actual cables). From what your character can tell, there are two red wires, one small wire, and two bona fide cables in the mess of wires and cables to choose from. And you can twist an already soldered wire/cable if you must.

Also keep in mind that the SECOND you get the right combination, the game will let you know. Keep track of every combo you try - write it down - so you can get it by process of elimination.
