If somehow we decided that spelling gets passed through bloodlines, we'd be in good company. Regarding the genetic basis for learning languages, Woody Allen once declared: "Syntax and structure are inherent -- but whining is acquired." Not sure whether he really meant adults learn it from their own kids, though...
