While I agree with almost everything you've said, I think you understate the usefulness of unions in modern society. There needs to be a balance between the powers of employers and employees (or, if you will, between Capital and Labour) for the benefit of both. Unions are important to ensure that employers can't return to the expoitative practices of the past.

While unions can go too far and harm their members as much as the employers, they still serve a vital role in any industrial economy, protecting the rights that they've fought for in the past. I agree that there's less of a need for strong unions in situations where employees have more power, and that third-world sweatshops would gain more from unions than the vast majority of American companies, but this is certainly not the same as saying that America has no need of unions at all.
