the green stuff

Maybe a little change of subject will be helpful. I do this every year about this time. Yes, the garden again.

The ground has been turned and disked. I went over yesterday morning and tilled up about a third of the space. That is probably unnecessary, because it always breaks up so well, but I find that it is easier to lay off rows in freshly tilled soil. I made six rows and we planted four of them. This early, we plant mostly onions, mustard greens, potatoes, lettuce, and such, because they can take a light freeze. The beans and corn will go in later.

Willette has started peppers and tomatoes under a light in the basement.

I wonder how many more years a couple of old folks in their 70's can continue to grow a garden. It is 50 feet wide and 150 feet long. But we like fresh vegetables and home grown, home cooked food is best for my diabetes.

The blue berries and cherries are almost ready to bloom. Last year we took off somewhere and were not at home when the cherries were ripe. The birds must have really enjoyed them.

Now, for a couple of weeks, all we have to do is keep watch to see what pops up first.

It has been a dry winter and the compost pile still looks like a pile of leaves. It's about 20 feet wide and 40 feet long, piled up about 2 or three feet deep. Wouldn't it be wild if I had to buy mulch! Maybe a little rain and warm weather will start it working.
