But in defense of mothers-in-law, they are also wives, mothers, and grandmothers. They bake cookies, baby-sit, teach little girls to sew, read to the kids at bedtime, make bisquits for breakfast, and never forget a birthday. My mother, my wife and her mother are also mothers-in-law and they have always done that job gracefully.

I seldom refer to my mother-in-law as my mother-in-law. She is usually just "my wife's mother." She has been good to me for 50 years. Even at 89, she still sees to it that the things I like are on the table. If I do a little job like cutting grass or putting up a new mailbox, she thanks me profusely. Her's is the first birthday card I get, year after year.

If your mother-in-law is an ugly little dictator with a cookie duster moustache, you have my sympathy. But treat her with respect and you might be surprised to get respect in return.
