You can get a gold coin out of Gestald by trickery and then honesty. Notice that really weird cave near where you meet him on the way to Larosis?

After that, there is only one thing you can get with the coin in town - it may seem counter-productive, but you WANT to be scorned into using the second-rate entrance...
