Actually, the FQ1 vampire only requires one piece of wood; the one you meet in FQ2 needs the cross. You have the item you need to dust him. (It's wooden, it's got a sharp splintered edge, it'll work as a stake.) And while I don't have my map handy, I think if you got to the gnome, you must have dusted him already.
The gate is at the north end of the forest. If you pass by the friendly drinking dwarf, you're on the right track. And remember: that sphinx isn't really guarding anything. You can walk right past him and he won't care as long as you don't bother him.
