Athens is smoggy and has the Acropolis. The small islands tend to have different characters, appealing to different sectors of the tourist trade - Kos for the gay clubbing set for instance. An full tan can be acquired at the more isolated beaches (most beaches are pebbles). Food and drink are generally reasonably priced, and don't hire a scooter unless your medical insurance is well up to date.

I was in Corfu once, but I didn't see anything cultural or historic. It is really just a resort place, but with toppless beaches. ;-)
(Just think my parents took me to a toppless beach when I was in eight grade. Sometimes being a military brat dosn't suck so much.)
