If I recall correctly, you don't have the opportunity or need to use your gun after beating up the poker cheat. You're forced to use another weapon when you face the mastermind.
I don't remember losing your gun, but I may not have put that down in my notes. I do know that you do have to sell the other guy's gun to get more money.
