You're right -- it doesn't.

The thing to remember about Gold Rush is that it was a VERY early game. It made sense when I was 11 years old. I'm not entirely convinced it's a good thing that I've lost the ability to make sense of it now, but I have the same questions you do. Why an orange? What the heck does that have to do with anything? I guess that's why I keep these games around. Maybe if child-sense and adult-sense could be reconciled in my head at the same time, I'll have the secrets of the universe or something.
