FQ2: giraffe!!!!

I sort of know what I'm supposed to do to get by the giraffe but it doesn't seem to work. This is very frustrating!! I went back to the place where I used the goo and went into the cavern but since it's pitch black dark I keep coming out on the same side instead of the other. Do I just need to keep trying until I do or am I not doing something right?
