Fighters are at their least effective in the middling levels, and a fourth spellcaster has better offensive capability than any fighter. On my scheme, the sorceror turned assassin takes over at 3 around the time a wizard's offence capability disappears.

Cross purposes again. When SP are abundant, I always use magic too.

I would rather have an Assassin in the third spot than a caster, for the simple reason that I can always count on a high-level Assassin to kill one group of enemies in one turn. When enemies get really strong, there is no spell that you can count on to kill any enemy in one turn.

I remember that in some of my longer games, I didn't bother attacking with my casters at all. It just wasn't worth it, because it took two turns to kill all the monsters anyway, and three Assassins could make short work of them in that amount of time without any help from the cheap seats.
