first, you need to be turning in your gold, as you go. it's like, the game progresses in steps, k ? more so, the other games than this one, but it's a good idea to get into habit of turning in what you find, as you go.
yes, there's something helpful to be found, upstairs in the tower. always, examine the area, when that option is available--- even "many" times. what you can "see" after 2/3 try can be different from the first.
