What Joona said, except I never really used LOCATION or COMPASS much for mapping. COMPASS is good when you get to a new level and you want to orient yourself for your map. (I learned this the hard way; all of my maps of levels 2 through 10 have north pointing down because that's how I began drawing my map of level 2.) LOCATION is good when you hit a teleport trap or a teleport square and want figure out where you are now. I don't use them for mapping, though.

What you want to use for your map (which, by the way, should be either in Excel or some other spreadsheet program, or on graph paper) is the dungeon views. (At the beginning, use the human's-eye view you always get; if you get a mapping object or spell, use the resulting bird's-eye view.)

But yeah, a Wizard is needed for your first party and any non-specialty parties, so that you can get the mapping spells plus some other useful spells.

Also, explore diligently; you may just not have explored diligently enough to find what you need in order to get to level 2.

Please tell us what your inventory is and maybe what you've done. We can't really help you without more information about where you are, since there's lots of possible points you could be at in your game, lots of puzzles that may or may not be solved given the information you've given us.
