Actually what happened was that you stepped on a teleport square which took you to an entirely different plus-shaped area in another part of level seven. Then you stepped on the return teleport square next to the pool which took you back to the location where you found the stone.

On my maps, I've denoted teleport squares with an asterisk, and used color-coding to indicate where they take you.
