I think you need to go to humanities. That's where Prof.'s Hawson and Major are. Once you talk to both of them you'll be able to get into the shack. Check your map if your not sure where the humanities building is. Don't bother trying to get the nerds to the junkyard until you've opened the shack.

Once the shack is open, take Silus and Verna there and talk to Verna. She will give you something important. Wait until Sunday (in the game) to take the nerds there.

As for food, don't worry about eating anything(in the game)until you have the bacon sandwich. Unfortunantly, your going to have to eat at Vominius because Echo dining hall is closed. You never get a chance to eat there in the whole game, not even on Sunday. Luckily, you don't need to go back to Vominius after you eat the bacon sandwich (the game won't let you anyway).
