I think some people are putting off buying stuff for their characters until the elimination rounds. Even though their opponents will have won more money, they'll also have spent more. Somebody who has delayed all their purchases will have an advantage over an opponent who has used up his/her edge through buying too many enchantments, or who has sold everything each turn in order to buy something marginally better. They may also be hoping the take their opponents by surprise.
On the other hand, some people may have simply decided that they didn't like the characters they just created, and abandoned them.
I guess we'll find out which is which tomorrow.
