my no-no list

All that talk about cereal got me to thinking about my no-no list. Within minutes of confirming that I had mild diabetes, my doctor told me that I had to stop eating pre-sweetened cereal, putting sugar in my coffee and tea, and that I could no longer eat creamed corn sweetened with sugar. (southern style) He said to avoid white bread or anything with highly refined flour in it.

I had to tell the poor man that I hate pre-sweetened cereal, never put sugar in my coffee or tea, and can't stand vegetables with sugar in them. For many years I have preferred whole-wheat bread, and almost never eat the white stuff.

He went down the list of foods that might have hidden sugar content and most of them were things I seldom or never ate. I think I had him wondering if the test results were wrong, so I admitted liking deserts and said I usually soaked my waffles and pan cakes in sugary syrup.
He probably felt better after that.

I know that doctors usually tell diabetics not to drink alcohol, but he already knew that I didn't drink or smoke. So he just said to get plenty of exercise, avoid sugar and monitor my blood sugar levels. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I was already walking seven to ten miles a week.
