Had a college friend who took her music ed degree from Mississippi, the only home she's ever had, to teach in Texas schools. Not a problem, she's incredibly bright. At first opportunity, the school she taught in recognized her as their Asian-American Teacher of the Year. Well-deserved, i thought, except that she's the ONLY teacher there of any notable Asian descent. Apparently, the school board requires Dallas area schools to recognize one of each ethnicity separately, if any are recognized at all. Silly, because one cannot really tell when the award's deserved, and when it's just the requirement.
