Go away from the valley several moves so that the next time you first enter the valley, the giraffe isn't right there waiting for you. (If he's still there as soon as you set foot in the valley, you didn't give him enough time to lose interest. Go away for a bit.)
This time, however, instead of going west to the giraffe, perhaps that pitch dark cavern to the north is worth exploring?
