I know what you mean. We installed some shelves in a hall closet, and I painted them a nice fresh white. Howver, that made the rest of the closet look dingy, so I painted it too. But then the inside of the closet looked brighter than the outside, so I painted the closet door, and the surrounding molding. Of course then I had to paint the closet next to it, inside and out, which then made the hallway ceiling and walls look shabby, so bought a can of flat paint for that. The last touch was to paint the door molding that connects the hall with the dining nook, and since I had some leftover paint I decided to paint the molding in there too, since I never had liked its color.

Koaladad commented that the new molding color in the dining area made the walls there look faded.

Fast forward a few months and I've now moved on to the laundry room, the back door, and am auditioning colors for the family room.

It will be a long time before I put shelves in again.
