beginning of the blast

I haven't read much of that thread with the subject "Blast from the Past." It's not a subject that interests me a lot, but the subject line got me to thinking. Where did that expression originate? A few years ago at a scooter meet they had an evening of entertainment that was called "A Blast from the Past." There was a lot of 50's music and everybody came dressed like high school kids from the 50's. Pretty funny when you consider that most were over 50 years old. Naturally, they came on 50's model scooters. But who came up with the name? Even at that time (circa 1998), "Blast from the Past" sounded familiar.
