Since you're probably immune, as a Card fan, to what some readers feel is his habit of making characters agonize endlessly over moral quandaries, I'll recommend another Card novel to you. It's a standalone rather than a series, so there's less demand on your time and wallet.

The book is _Pastwatch: The Redemption Of Christopher Columbus_. It's a pretty nifty little work of part-speculative, part-historical fiction, that takes time to tell the personal stories of several different characters and still works in some contemplation of the movement of history on a grand scale. Which, now that I re-read that last sentence, doesn't really tell you much. But anyway, I enjoyed it.
