acronyms

Just to show how confusing acronyms can be, I looked up two (see link). One was NEA, an organization I've belonged to for 44 years, and SEC. I got 17 NEA's and 46 SEC's. I see acronyms used in news stories from time to time and I'm sure the writer never studied journalism, because as a freshman journalism student about 50 years ago, I was taught to never use an acronym in a news story without spelling it out completely the first time you use it. That means that if I write an article about New York City, I can only refer to it as NYC after I have spelled it out as New York City. So why didn't I properly identify SEC above? Because this is an internet post and not a news article. My journalism teacher never mentioned internet posting.
