It's not just American history, either. Slaves have existed since the beginning of civilization, but since the Civil War was the latest and greatest conflict over slaves, when people think of slavery they conjure up the image of black slaves. Romans had slaves, as did Greeks and Africans. In the American colonies, slavery was a possible punishment for crimes. And that was WHITE slavery, thank you very much. All this "culturally sensitive" stuff is just a load of BS.
