I suspect Sam was feeling a little nostalgic when he made that one up (assuming it was him) - a lot of the games mentioned are from the 8-bit days, or old Unix games - from what he's written about Murkon's Refuge, I'd guess they were the kind of thing he played at university, although I may be talking complete rubbish here :-).
