When my grandfather was diagnosed with it some years ago. Up until that time, I don't think I knew of anyone personally who had it, but afterward it seemed like I was always learning about someone else. So I know exactly what you mean in that regard.

There's a word for the phenomenon where you are introduced to a word or concept and from that point on suddenly start to perceive it everywhere around you, to the point where you wonder if you were just not picking up on it all along. But I forget what it is.
