I actually thought of voicing this same thought in my last post. I see your point about the complexity and difficulty of changing the way things are done now, and I personally think that the only workable solution is a shift in the attitudes of the music industry towards models like those being discussed elsewhere in this thread. I do question whether people will actually pay for music online when they can get it for free, but I suspect that many will, and those that do will stop sharing their files through existing "free" avenues, leading to a slow death (or at least drastic reduction) in the use of those avenues. Only time will tell, though.
