But then again, why target that minority (even if not exclusively) to generate revenue?

Well... yeah, if we're talking "pay to get in *at* *all*, I'm none too thrilled about it. But it seems like we were talking about "pay for ad-free version; no charge for version with ads", I can quite happily go along with that.
