Try not to confuse misevaluation with intelligence. Some people don't realize they make inferences and assume they are true. I think if you pointed out that a Canadian hat doesn't necessarily have (intrinsically) the meaning they give it, they would check further before praising/cursing the person wearing it. Some people hate Canadian hats.
