I live less than an hour from the border at
Sault Sainte Marie and have not these rumors
either. However, people in my area have
always been disposed to think very highly of
Canada and all things Canadian.

It's a very rural area, and the nearest mall and
the second-nearest multiplex are just there
across the bridge. When we want to see a
broadway play or the "big city," we go to
Toronto, not New York. And, we're just as nuts
about hockey and have similar accents ("eh").
People routinely fly the Canadian flag side by
side with our own (especially in the Soo).

While the lack of official support is
disappointing, I have not seen anything
beyond mild annoyance. But if my neighbors
are truly that angry, I believe (and hope) the
high emotional ties would prevent such
mildy-ridiculous-to-inexcusably-rude actions
(in my area; I can't speak for other parts of the
country).

I have to say that personally (emotionally), I
would much rather we had Canada's support
than France, Germany, Russia or China
combined. Canada has always seemed like
our great, serene, cheerful, northern friend.
Their good opinion, I guess, just means more
to me.
