Valid point. Some people think if Best Animated Feature weren't a new category last year, "Shrek" would have found its way into the Best Picture nomination list.
The thing is, the problem is people, not the Oscar categories. Animated films, foreign films, and documentaries get ignored, period, and will always get ignored until the stigma against these types of films goes away. That isn't happening anytime soon. Giving them special categories at the Oscars allows these films to be recognized, at the expense of potentially reinforcing the stigma. As loath as I am to want to do the latter, I'd rather do the former as well. But it's certainly not something I'd try to argue.
