My candidate is knight (very briefly, just to get a few hit points) to wizard (again very briefly, to get light and orientation spells) to sorceror (to get all the spells) back to wizard (to get the rest of the useful spells, you don't need the last few), then to assassin.

That's cheating!! (grin)

But getting a solo wizard past level 1 is hard work - it took me three characters before I did it. The first two both ran out of money for resurrections.
