I've even asked what the dress code was like when setting up the interview. I always wear nice slacks and a shirt and tie at the least but that is only when they've told me that the office is very casual. One boss said his shoes were never on his feet after lunch. Another interviewer who I did not ask was surprised I had worn a tie. I guess they usually told the interviewees to come fairly casual. A few years ago, I read that some companies looked down on people who dressed up for the interview. Of course, this was at the beginning of the dotcom boom and in the middle of Silicon Valley.

But it does depend on the company.
