Sounds something like Birkenstock-type sandals. A few years back when they were THE thing to be seen in (especially if you're cool enough to pull off wearing them with the socks, too) when in public, a local German exchange student let us in on a little joke. Apparently, America didn't have it explained that these German sandals were only worn by Germans as house-shoes.
